Wayland Cleans Up! Annual Roadside Trash Pick Up Event

Event Description

On Saturday April 13 Waylanders will come out in droves to clean up the roadsides, parks, and trails. The rain date will be April 20.

You can clean up any time, anywhere. If you stop by our table at the Wayland Transfer Station (484 Boston Post Rd) on April 13, between 9 AM and 2 PM, you can pick up free bags and gloves, and directions to the places in our town that most need a clean up.

Please sort recyclables and trash into separate bags. Unfortunately anything that is dirty with soil or leaves, and any paper that is wet, has to go into the trash bag. Not sure what is trash, what is recycling? At the Transfer Station we’ll have instructions and demos on what is recyclable or not. We’ll also have lots of information about what is going on with recycling worldwide, and how we in Wayland can make a difference.

You can drop off your bagged “collections” at the Wayland Transfer Station any time before 3:00 PM. The Transfer Station will exceptionally let Waylanders enter without a sticker on that day, and you will not require the orange PAYT bags for the trash.

While you’re there, take a tour of the Transfer Station, hear all about the history of trash in Wayland, and check out the Give-and-Take.

If you find items too large to move, such as large pieces of metal or wood, rubber tires, appliances, or syringes, chemicals, or other hazardous materials, email us at [email protected] with the location and we will pass it on to the Department of Public Works.

Volunteers of all ages are welcome! Previous Clean Ups have seen three-year-olds and ninety-year-olds equally enthusiastic to do their share. Wear orange or another bright color for safety and visibility along the road. Please stay safe! If sunny, bring sun hat, sunscreen, insect repellent. Watch out for poison ivy and ticks, if any.

Also, take selfies and share them on social media and email them to us with your thoughts for a follow-up article in the Crier (email [email protected], or find MassEnergize on Facebook).

If the weather puts you in doubt, check here (www.EnergizeWayland.org) to see if we’re on.

This year’s Spring Greening will also feature rain barrels at discount prices, workshops on what to do with food scraps, building waste, old electronics and textiles, and field trips to a recycling processing plant and a large-scale composting site, and much more. Check back soon (www.EnergizeWayland.org) for more information!
